Ice Hockey is a fast-paced team sport where two teams of six players aim to score more goals than the opponent by shooting a puck into the opposing net. Teams alternate between offense and defense throughout the game.
Rink Layout
Ice rink: Divided into three zones – defensive, neutral, and offensive.
Goals: Each end has a goal crease, and the rink is surrounded by boards and glass to keep the puck in play.
Basic Rules and Gameplay
Starting Play: Begins with a face-off at center ice. Players skate, pass, and shoot using sticks to create scoring chances.
Scoring: A goal is scored when the puck fully crosses the goal line between the posts and under the crossbar.
Shifts and Substitutions: Players play in short shifts, often under a minute. Substitutions occur on the fly without stopping play.
Defense: Teams block shots, check opponents, and use positioning to prevent goals. The goalie stops shots and controls rebounds.
Penalties: Fouls such as tripping, hooking, or roughing result in penalties, forcing the offending team to play short-handed for a set duration.
Timing
Periods: Three 20-minute periods with intermissions.
Overtime/Shootout: Tied games may go to overtime or a shootout, depending on league rules.
Winning
The team with the most goals at the end of regulation (or overtime/shootout) wins.
Ice Hockey combines speed, physicality, and precision, making it one of the most exciting team sports to watch and play.
