Expected Goals (xG), powered by Opta, estimates how many goals each team should have scored so far in a live football match, based on the quality of the chances they’ve created.
The actual score can differ from the xG values. xG gives you another view of how well each team is performing, based on chance quality rather than goals scored.
Where to find Expected Goals
xG is available in selected live football matches.
- Search for the football match you’re interested in.
- Open its live page.
- Find the xG value right underneath the scoreboard.
How to read Expected Goals
The first number is the home team’s xG and the second number is the away team’s.
Example: in a Barcelona vs Valencia match, the xG at the 43rd minute might read 0.80 – 0.35. Barcelona have created better-quality chances so far and, based on that, would be expected to have scored close to one goal, while Valencia have created fewer good chances.
xG updates as the match goes on and more chances are created. In the same example, it might read 1.10 – 0.40 at the 63rd minute.
Important information
xG values are based on an analysis of a team’s current match statistics. They should be considered purely informative and do not guarantee any match results or profits.
